Welcome, Ciarán Veitenheimer!

Ciarán Veitenheimer joined our team as a research assistant at PtU on September 15, 2023. Mr. Veitenheimer is part of the “ProKI” project. The aim of the project is to establish a demonstration and transfer network for applications of artificial intelligence in the metalworking industry, with a focus on forming technology. The central core of the project is the development and transfer of AI-based, practical applications into the production environment of small and medium-sized enterprises as well as the transfer of skills in the field of AI.

During his studies, Mr. Veitenheimer was able to get to know the institute as part of the excellence program “Forming your Future” and gain initial experience with the application of machine learning to forming processes. This was deepened by working on additional study projects dealing with the processing of time series and image data.

He also wrote his master's thesis entitled “Control of the springback of a die bending process on a 3D servo press using machine learning methods” at the institute. In this context, a tool and a simulation model were developed that allows V-die bending to be designed variably with regard to the desired angle. Based on this, it was investigated to what extent machine learning methods, in particular reinforcement learning methods, are suitable for controlling the springback that occurs.
