No chance for bacteria on titanium implants

2023/02/23

The insertion of hip or dental implants is a routine operation. However, such operations are not without risk: Infections with multi-resistant bacteria can occur, the treatment of which with antibiotics is hardly possible. In addition, implants often do not last ten years due to mechanical abrasion. PtU researchers are changing this with the help of a new material and the associated production chain in an international consortium. The new nanostructured titanium material shows optimized mechanical, chemical and biological properties that are superior to conventional implants. Currently, the scientists are researching how bacteria and bone cells interact with the nanostructured surface and how industrial production of the material can succeed.
