PtU wins second place at the Hessian State Energy Award – Clever solutions for the energy turnaround

2020/12/10

Hesse's State Secretary for Economic Affairs Jens Deutschendorf awarded second place in the Hessian State Prize for innovative energy solutions to Andreas Wächter and Lukas Kluy from the Institute for Production Technology and Forming Machines (PtU) at the Technical University of Darmstadt. “The competition is intended to act as a driver of innovation. In view of the exceptional circumstances in which it took place this year, we are all the more pleased to be able to award prizes to outstanding projects from all the entries,” says Deutschedorf.

In her keynote, Prof. Lamia Messari-Becker (member of the Club of Rome) underlined the role of innovation. “Climate protection is a driver for innovation. Here, too, the pillars of the social market economy must remain in place. It is essential that performance, innovation and competition as components of successful climate protection and change towards more sustainability accompany society”. In doing so, she encouraged further development and the search for innovative approaches to keep society, the environment and the economy together. Dr. Karsten McGovern (Managing Director of the LandesEnergieAgentur LEA Hessen) praised the number of projects submitted from different sectors and areas of life. “The commitment of all participants shows that energy system transformation can be successfully implemented in Hesse.

The project submitted by Andreas Wächter and Lukas Kluy deals with the proactive development of energy efficiency potentials of new technologies. The project idea was developed within the framework of BMBF-funded research into the manufacture of nanostructured implants (IdentiTI). This is because the efficient use of energy is often not a separate requirement when a new process is first enabled for production. The novelty of the approach lies in including the aspect of energy efficiency throughout the entire process development phase.

To implement this, the value chain is considered from the very beginning in terms of energy and mapped in a digital model. The greater freedom of design in early phases of development allows efficiency measures to be implemented cost-effectively and effectively. In the IdentiTI research project, the energy-efficient design of the value chain is being carried out proactively and already in academic research. This enables potentials to be tapped early on.

”In addition, the project shows that energy efficiency in research is not explicitly limited to research on energy efficiency, but can make an important contribution to the industrialisation of new technologies as part of other research projects," says Andreas Wächter.
