A quick method to check the welding result at collision welding

2018/03/08

For the third phase of the priority program 1640 “Joining by plastic deformation”, the ultrasonic “MiniScanner” of Amsterdam Technology was procured by the German Research Foundation (DFG) for the project A5 “Investigation of the formation mechanisms of the joining zone during collision welding”.

Amsterdam Technology MiniScanner

The ultrasonic testing device “MiniScanner” was specifically developed for the fast and detailed examination of small welded areas (scanning area: 21 mm x 25 mm). A locally high-resolution ultrasound examination is possible due to a sensor that moves within the scanning unit. During the scanning process, approximately 0.1 mm x 0.1 mm sections are recorded as so-called A-scan echoes. By creating a C-scan image, a merged two-dimensional image of the scanned area is obtained. This enables a fast recognition of changes in the material structure such as the material close bond and possible defects by means of color visualization. The results can be digitally processed by means of the supplied software. (Reference: Amsterdam Technology)

The PtU thanks the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) for the purchase of the test equipment.
