Project start for the forming production of targets for laser fusion
2025/02/28
On December 20, the kick-off meeting of the BMBF-funded IFE Targetry HUB project took place at in Darmstadt. The aim of the project is to develop basic technologies for laser-based inertial confinement fusion. Focused Energy
Nuclear fusion has the potential to solve global energy problems, but commercial use of this technology is not yet foreseeable. One hurdle is the production of so-called targets, which play a central role in laser-based inertial confinement fusion. The joint project with 15 partners from research and industry under the leadership of Fraunhofer IAF is focusing on how these targets can be produced. The PtU is participating in the project, in which the suitability of forming processes for manufacturing the targets is being investigated. Due to the highly productive sheet metal forming processes, there is great potential here for later use in fusion reactors.
