Nanostructured Ti-13Nb-13Zr alloy for implant application

Every year, around 15,000 people die in German hospitals because bacteria on implants cause infections. As many hospital germs are already resistant to antibiotics, a research project is focusing on the implant itself: Bacteria should no longer be able to adhere to nano-rough titanium surfaces. With the involvement of the PtU, international researchers from the fields of orthopaedics, materials science and production technology have investigated how the nanostructures can be produced and how bacteria and bone cells react biologically on this surface.
