Project start Design2Collide

2023/05/30

Since the beginning of April, the PtU has been part of the research project Design2Collide – Collision-welded Hybrid Lightweight Structures, which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection and investigates the joining of high-strength aluminium and steel materials by collision welding.

Constantly rising energy prices and the awareness of the continuously advancing climate change are driving the focus in many industrial sectors on improved lightweight construction and the associated reductions in CO2 emissions and the consumption of fossil raw materials. In this respect, the so-called multi-material construction method offers the possibility of installing the right material in the right place. In combination with high-strength steel and aluminium materials, it opens the way to new types of lightweight construction potential, which, however, can only be finally tapped with the appropriate joining technologies. The aim of the research project is to qualify electromagnetic pulse welding as an automatable representative of the collision welding processes for forming joints between high-strength steel and aluminium materials.
