Yutian Wu has successfully completed his PhD

2023/05/12

On 09.05.2023, the successful disputation of our former scientific employee Yutian Wu took place. His dissertation is entitled “Wear control in sheet metal forming – detection and life span estimation”.

For a sustainable development, controlling tool wear effectively has many ecological and economic benefits in metal forming. In his work, three main topics, i.e. real-time wear detection, accurate estimation of tool life, and characterization of the influence of wear, are investigated for better wear controlling.

Thermoelectric current monitoring is a sensorless, in-line and reliable method for wear detection. With this approach, tool wear can be detected in real time and the wear development can be obtained with high time resolution by thermoelectric measurements.

Another focus of the dissertation is on indirect wear prediction through wear resistance analysis. Through wear resistance diagram, the influence of factors such as contact stress, hardness of tools and sheets, and surface roughness on tool life spans can be characterized. In addition, the derived wear resistance curve can be used to estimate the life of typical tribological systems at different operating load levels.

The PtU thanks Mr Wu for his many years of commitment and wishes him all the best and every success for his professional and personal future.
