Excursion to Schunk Sintermetals in Heuchelheim with the winners of the TdF case study "Economic efficiency in powder metallurgy”

2018/12/10

On 10.12.2018 an excursion to Schunk Sintermetals in Heuchelheim took place as part of the lecture “Technology of production processes”.

The participants had won the case study competition with the topic “Economic efficiency in powder metallurgy”. In this competition, they had dealt with the cost calculation of a lightweight brake pipe adapter. The focus was on a comparative economic analysis of additive manufacturing processes and conventional sintering technology. A further part of the task was the production-oriented design of sintered parts.

Following a company presentation on the Schunk Group's diverse business fields, the students were guided through the workshops by Dr. Baumgärtner, Head of Research and Development at the Sinter Metal Technology Division. Of particular interest were the fully automated production lines with sophisticated process control and testing technology. The surface quality and dimensional accuracy of the parts produced using conventional sintering technology were also impressive. The excursion was rounded off with lunch in the company canteen.

The PtU and the participating students would like to thank Schunk Sintermetals for the well-organized and technically extraordinarily interesting guided tour as well as for the constructive cooperation in the context of the case study competition.
