A novel forming process: “Flexible roller beading” An analytical model to predict component failure

The PtU has developed the new production process “Flexible Roll Beading”. This process enables the continuous production of height-adjustable profiles (Fig. 1). The desired profile geometry is formed in several steps. However, it is noticeable that strip edge waves form during the forming process (Fig. 2). These waves are the undesirable result of compressive stresses in the profile edge that occur during the process.

Within the scope of this work, an analytical model is to be developed on the basis of numerical investigations in order to predict the occurrence of waves. This includes the following tasks:

  • - Identification of the influencing factors of wave formation
  • - Creation of a simulation model for the investigation of stresses and displacements during the process
  • - Development of a mathematical model for the description and prediction of component failure by waves
