Development of a Geological Survey Method based on an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle

A geological survey is the systematic investigation of the geology beneath a given piece of ground for the purpose of creating a geological map or model. The Autonomous UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) is an ideal platform for geological surveys, like surface measurement, mapping, and 3D modeling. Compared to manned aircraft, the UAV is low-cost, easier to implement, and compatible with various sensors. Giving a geological survey mission, firstly, the operator formulates the path based on the scenario and requirement of the mission. During the operation, the sensor continuously collects data with the movement of the UAV. Finally, The collected data will be processed to meet the requirement of the mission.


The objective of this project is the development of a geological survey method based on a UAV prototype and an onboard camera. The UAV has been exploited and tested. The first step is path planning according to the survey mission. Further, an image collection and processing algorithm is required which implement on an onboard computer. Finally, design a field experiment to evaluate the developed method.
