In the framework of a disputation on digital platform, Mr. Lennart Wießner successfully defends his dissertation on the topic “Processes for magnetically hardening of iron-based materials by continuous plastic deformation” on October 27th, 2021.
The focus of Mr. Wießner's work is on the tuning of the microstructure by forming processes. In his doctoral exam, Mr. Wießner shows that forming processes can achieve targeted changes in the microstructure and thus increase the magnetic properties of the selected materials. Forming processes rotary swaging and Equal-Chanel-Angular-Swaging (ECAS) are applied in his thesis to achieve corresponding anisotropy (specific orientation of the grains) as well as grain refinement (smaller grain size). In addition, numerical simulations are used to investigate the correlations between process parameters and material properties. The metallographic as well as magnetic measurements prove the increase of magnetic properties due to the microstructural modifications.
