The winners of the case study “powder metallurgy” had the opportunity to deepen the theoretical contents of the lecture “Technology of manufacturing processes” in practice at the company Schunk Sintermetalltechnik GmbH. At first, the participants got an insight into the entire business group and the diverse technology fields in the concern. During the factory tour the individual process steps of sintering were shown and the variety of shapes for the producible parts was demonstrated. All significant aspects of this technology were covered, ranging from powder compression and shaping of the green body, actual sintering (heat treatment), calibration and oil soaking up to quality management. The excursion was rounded off by a common lunch with the development manager and offered the possibility for interesting and inspiring discussions.
Case studies are voluntary tasks for students (teams) accompanying the lecture “Technology of manufacturing processes”. The assignments result from the cooperation with industrial companies. Thus, the first semester students of mechanical engineering can deepen their knowledge in the field of industrial implementation and get a first insight into the possible sectors of their future vocational fields.
