To give students the opportunity to improve their theoretical knowledge obtained from lectures, the PtU offers Advanced Design Projects or thesis which are completed with industrial partners. In addition, excursions are organized by the PtU annually. Thereby companies are visited, in which typical forming technologies are displayed. This year the PtU visited the companies Saarstahl, Saarschmiede and Eberspächer in the area around Saarbrücken. Initially, Saarstahl and Saarschmiede were the destination of the 14 students. The product range of these companies offers the possibility to show the students the process chain from steel manufacturing to semi-finished products and finished forging parts. Especially at the company Saarstahl, the processes of molding and massive forming in steel production were focused on. A special feature of the company Saarschmiede is that the manufactured forging parts have a weight of up to 120t and the subsequent turning shop has corresponding lathes in XXL format. The last point on the schedule was the company Eberspächer, in which the production of components of the exhaust system for the automotive industry could be shown. Here the classical processes of sheet metal forming were brought closer to the students.
At this point the students and all involved staff of the PtU would like to thank the visited companies for the informative as well as open discussions and interesting insights into the production.
