The day before the competition, all teams presented the planes and their manufacturing processes. The day ended with a barbecue together with all teams and the organizers. The »ÖVB Arena« in Bremen was the venue for the flights on the next day, where the planes where launched from a height of about 10 meters. Besides a maximum weight of 400 grams, the planes have to fit into a cube with an edge length of one meter and must carry a nut as payload. The maximum budget for each team was 250,– €. In addition to the prizes for the three longest flights, an extra prize was awarded for the most innovative concept. Team Darmstadt 3 won this prize with their triplane »Stählerner Baron«. It did not only have a great wing surface, but also featured a rubber band motor which drove a propeller. With a flight time of almost 23 seconds and a weight of only 33 grams, a glider from Bremen won the competition. In the next year, »Stahl fliegt« will take place in Aachen.
The competition is organized by the Institute of Metal Forming (ibf) in Aachen and financially supported by the FOSTA (Research Association for Steel Application).
