On January 13, the excursion with the winning teams of the first places of the case study »interpretation of measurement data« took place. The mid-sized enterprise PSTproducts GmbH was the industrial partner for the case study on high speed forming and therefore the destination of the excursion. The company's core business is the development and the distribution of machines for electromagnetic forming, welding and cutting.
The students were given insights into the machine technology that is needed to charge high-voltage capacitors which drive pulsed electric currents of several hundred thousand amperes through specific coils. Furthermore, the process of electromagnetic pulse welding was explained and demonstrated. It allows metallurgical bonding of even dissimilar metals by a supersonic impact without any heat affection.
Case studies are tasks which are voluntarily solved by students or student teams during the lecture »Technology of manufacturing processes«. These tasks are created in close cooperation with industrial companies. Thus, the mechanical engineering students are enabled to gather first experiences in applying their theoretical knowledge to the industrial application as early as in their first semester. Thereby, the students gain insights into their future professional field.
