Student assistant for simulation of fluid-structural interaction (FSI) in combined roller and plain bearings using OpenFOAM


In modern forming presses, extreme load conditions occur in the drive train, which affect the bearings in particular. In order to meet these requirements, combined plain rolling bearings were developed at the Institute for Production Technology and Forming Machines (PtU).

In order to better understand the behaviour of these bearings, a numerical simulation model is being developed which maps the interactions between the flow of the lubricant and the structural dynamic behaviour of the shaft and bearing components. A student assistant is needed to support the project. The tasks include among others:

  • Creation of calculation grids
  • Determination of suitable boundary conditions
  • Validation of simulation results using experimental data

Applicants should have some experience with numerical simulations (ideally with OpenFOAM).
